For over thirty years, artists have witnessed an annually occurring phenomenon at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY–if the conditions are right. On May 24, 2018 the conditions were perfect, and I was the latest to bear witness to and document the phenomenon over the course of 53 minutes. In this time a lowly bowl is monumentalized; transformed by light, its image passes from utilitarian syntax into the grammar of the graphic arts. However, the documentarians’ urgent presence is revealed in the final moments. For H.F. & R. Mutt.
